In mid-October, 11 innovative companies from Sweden, Finland, Estonia, and Latvia traveled to Chicago as part of the EU-funded Bridging4Growth project. The delegation aimed to connect these companies with local stakeholders and practical strategies to break into the U.S. market. With us from Norrköping, we had our local companies Interspectral and Ligna Energy.

Showcasing Norrköping’s Innovation in Chicago

Representing Sweden, Norrköping-based companies Interspectral and Ligna Energy joined a diverse group of companies from Finland, Estonia, and Latvia. Interspectral, known for their advanced 3D visualization solutions, and Ligna Energy, a pioneer in sustainable energy storage, showcased the strengths of Norrköping’s innovation ecosystem in Chicago. We’re brave to say that this opportunity was more than a regular business trip—it was a chance for all companies to explore the potential in one of the world’s most dynamic markets and to make their mark on the global stage.

Through a week of curated activities, including workshops, networking sessions, and site visits, the delegation offered these companies the chance to delve deeply into the U.S. market landscape, with Illinois and Chicago as a starting point.

What is the market like and what can affect it?

One of the key aspects of the Chicago delegation was gaining a thorough understanding of the U.S. market landscape. Hosted by experts from Business Sweden, the Illinois Department of Commerce, and World Business Chicago, the group was introduced to the unique challenges and opportunities that this market presents. Seminar topics included insights into Chicago’s economic climate, the impact of the U.S. elections on international business, and growing demand in sustainable and tech sectors.

Building Connections in the U.S. Market

In a market like the U.S., establishing trusted relationships is key to long-term success. Therefore networking was a central part of the delegation’s mission, and the agenda was filled with opportunities for companies to connect with potential partners or clients. At the arranged ”Nordic X Chicago” event in the iconic Willis Tower, the companies got the chance to network with over 70 participants from both the U.S. and Nordic regions, enabling new interesting connections.

Preparing for Market Entry: Legal and Cultural Insights

Understanding the legal and cultural nuances of the U.S. market is essential for any company looking to expand abroad. With guidance from legal experts at ArentFox Schiff, the delegation received a comprehensive overview of critical topics, from intellectual property to tax considerations. This information worked as a great toolkit for the companies, helping them avoid common legal pitfalls.

Cultural differences were also explored, with sessions on American business etiquette, pitching strategies, and effective communication styles. This knowledge not only equips companies for successful client interactions but also prepares them to establish trust with U.S. partners, an essential factor in building a lasting presence in the market.

Learning from success stories and visiting Innovation Hubs

The delegation’s visit to ”Sievo”, a Finnish-American company with successful U.S. operations, was a highlight for many participants. Sievo shared valuable lessons on navigating the challenges of U.S. market entry, and their journey served as an inspiring example of what’s possible with the right approach and support.

Additionally, a tour of Mhub, Chicago’s largest innovation center for hard tech and manufacturing, offered a firsthand look at Chicago’s robust support for startups and entrepreneurial growth. These visits provided the companies with concrete examples of how to scale in the U.S.

The importance of being present

The delegation left a lasting impact and we all returned home with fresh insights, valuable contacts, and a strong foundation for expanding into the U.S. market. A main takeaway that we got to hear over and over again from the American experts is that ”For the American market it is important that you visit the market and have a presence here”. For many of the companies, this trip was the first step in a long-term journey to establish a presence in North America. We are looking forward to follow and support their next steps.
