Circular cities start with smarter data - helping cities turn building waste into urban opportunities
Today, only 1% of construction materials are reused, even though more than 25% could be salvaged. Circular strategies struggle due to low demand for reused materials and lack of integrated data. Material flows are hard to track across construction projects, making it difficult for cities to plan, monitor, and implement circular solutions. META-SETS addresses this by creating a scalable framework to connect and use data on construction materials, supporting circular urban development.
META-SETS develops a data management and monitoring framework to scale circular economy practices in urban construction. Tested in Sweden, Belgium, and Italy, the project collects, analyzes, and shares data on material flows. Using a digital twin environment, cities can simulate low-emission, resource-saving strategies and make data-driven decisions tailored to local needs.
The project will deliver tools and frameworks that empower cities to implement circular practices, enhance policy development, and support sustainable urban management. Outputs include city-specific digital twins, material flow maps, and decision-support tools.
Expected impacts includes increased material reuse, reduced waste, optimized logistics, lower emissions, and opportunities for continued innovation and market uptake.
