Drone Innovation in Focus During International Study Visit

Last week, Norrköping Science Park hosted an international study visit in Norrköping as part of IAS Business Academy, an EU-funded cooperation programme supporting companies within innovative aerial services and drone technology on their international growth journey. Participants from across the Central Baltic region gathered for several intensive days focused on knowledge exchange, business development and collaboration.

The study visit brought together founders, innovators and experts for several days of immersive activities focused on the rapidly growing drone ecosystem. Participants visited key test and production environments in the region, including Norrköping Airport, Drone Center Sweden in Västervik, Scanfil Drone Manufacturing in Åtvidaberg, and RISE Drone Lab in Linköping. These visits showcased local innovation, real-world testing environments and opportunities for collaboration within both civil and dual-use drone applications.

Throughout the programme, discussions ranged from technical development and regulatory frameworks to market growth and cross-border cooperation. Joint workshops and expert sessions allowed participants to exchange insights, build networks and reflect on common challenges in scaling their businesses internationally. This practical and collaborative approach is central to the Academy’s mission of helping companies develop sustainable growth strategies beyond their home markets.

The study visit also highlighted the value of connecting startups with research environments and industry stakeholders. By walking through active innovation hubs and meeting with local actors, participants gained a deeper understanding of both regional strengths and potential areas for future cooperation across the Central Baltic.

There is something special that happens when people meet in person over several days. The focus was strong, the questions were curious and there was a genuine interest in learning from one another – exactly what IAS Business Academy is about. Our ambition is that, in a few years, this study visit will be remembered as the starting point for Europe’s drone ecosystem taking shape around Östergötland, says Bo Sundborg, Project Manager at Norrköping Science Park.
